How Band-IT Banding Works

  1. Cut to length: Band is cut from a continuous roll to precisely the length required for the diameter being secured — no pre-sizing, no size inventory management. A dedicated Band-IT cutting tool produces a clean, safe-edged cut without sharp burrs.
  2. Thread and wrap: The band is threaded through a buckle or clip and wrapped around the pipe, cable bundle, or hose assembly at the required position.
  3. Tension: A Band-IT tensioning tool — manual, pneumatic, or battery-powered — draws the band tight to the specified tension, applying uniform compressive force around the full circumference of the secured component.
  4. Lock: The buckle or clip is crimped or locked, permanently securing the band at the applied tension — no screw to loosen, no thread to strip.
  5. Cut excess: The remaining band tail is cut cleanly, leaving a low-profile permanent installation.

The Band-IT system's locking buckle mechanism — whether a conventional buckle, the ULTRA-LOK® low-profile clip, or the BAND-FAST® pre-assembled system — provides a permanent, self-locking hold that resists vibration-induced loosening, shock loads, and thermal expansion forces. Note: 201SS provides lower corrosion resistance than 304SS in chloride-containing environments; not suitable for marine or coastal applications.
  • 304SS: The dominant Band-IT specification for EU industrial, utilities, construction, and general outdoor applications — excellent corrosion resistance to atmospheric exposure, mild chemical contact, and urban pollution. The HCL standard Band-IT specification for inland applications.
  • 316SS: Marine-grade stainless with molybdenum — the mandatory specification for coastal, marine, offshore, and chloride-rich industrial environments where 304SS would suffer pitting over the installation's service life. Used extensively for offshore cable and umbilical attachment, harbour and coastal infrastructure, and marine vessel cable routing.

Specialty coatings — Nylon 11, polyester — are available for applications requiring additional protection for delicate cables from the band's metal edge, or for chemical resistance beyond what bare stainless provides.

Utilities and Telecommunications

316SS Band-IT is the dominant cable and pipe attachment specification for marine vessels and offshore platforms — permanently attaching hydraulic hoses, electrical cables, and umbilicals to structure where conventional clamps would corrode. In the same applications where Smart Band PA66 polymer banding is specified for cathodic protection (CP) system compatibility (subsea cable attachment), Band-IT 316SS metallic banding is specified for above-water topsides structural attachment where CP interference is not a concern.
