Specialist Alloys: Beyond HCL's Standard Range

Certain oil and gas environments require corrosion resistance or mechanical properties that exceed W5 (316SS) capability:

  • Sour Service (H₂S environments): Environments with significant hydrogen sulphide content require materials tested and approved to NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 for resistance to sulphide stress cracking (SSC) — typically Super Duplex stainless steels (2507/F55, 2205/F53) or Duplex stainless. These specialist alloys are outside HCL's standard supply range.
  • Seawater immersion (extreme chloride): For clamp components in continuously seawater-immersed locations where even W5 may suffer crevice corrosion — Super Duplex, Monel, or titanium may be specified. Outside HCL's standard range.
  • High-temperature refining (above 300°C): For clamp components near high-temperature process streams, specialised heat-resistant alloys (Inconel grades) may be required. Outside HCL's standard range.
