SM-FT-4000-UN: The Latest HCL Smart® Installation Tool with Torque-Controlled Tensioning

Band tension is an engineering specification — not a judgement call made in the field. Under-tension a Smart® Band Compact and it will creep under structural or hydrodynamic load; exceed the material's design threshold and long-term holding performance is compromised. The SM-FT-4000-UN is HCL's latest torque-controlled tensioning tool, engineered specifically for the Smart® Band Compact system — the strongest cable management strap in the world, with system strengths up to 5,929 lbf and proven 30+ year subsea life. Designed and built in the UK. Browse the full HCL Smart® Installation Tool range.

Smart® Band Compact: Two Products, Two Environments

The Smart® Band Compact is a system comprising two distinct polymer grades, each engineered for a specific operational environment. Both are available in 19mm (3/4") and 32mm (1 1/4") band widths, both are manufactured in the UK, and both share the Compact's defining characteristic: a buckle over 60% smaller than the Smart® Band Hybrid, over-moulded directly onto the band for increased strength, capable of installing on structures down to 100mm diameter where the Hybrid system cannot seat.

Product Material Max Temperature Max System Strength Flammability Primary Application
Smart® Band PA12GF Compact Glass-fibre reinforced Nylon 12 110°C (230°F) 5,929 lbf (32mm) HB UL94 Self Extinguishing High-strength subsea and offshore cable management, VIV strakes
Smart® Band PPS Compact Polyphenylene Sulfide 175°C (347°F) 4,747 lbf (32mm) V-0 UL94 Self Extinguishing High-temperature, sour service, H2S environments, fire-rated zones

Both grades are non-corrosive, non-conductive, and designed for permanent subsea and offshore installation. The SM-FT-4000-UN covers all four Compact variants — PA12GF and PPS, 19mm and 32mm — in a single universal tool.

PA12GF Compact: Maximum Strength

The Smart® Band PA12GF Compact uses glass-fibre reinforced Nylon 12 — the reinforcement earns the "strongest cable tie or strap in the world" designation at up to 5,929 lbf system strength in the 32mm width. PA12GF combines Nylon 12's chemical resistance and low moisture absorption with glass fibre's structural rigidity, producing a strap with exceptional tensile performance for its size and polymer classification.

Primary applications across the North Sea, Celtic Sea, and West of Shetland:

  • VIV Strake installation: Vortex-Induced Vibration strakes — the helical fins attached to deepwater risers, tendons, and SCRs to disrupt vortex shedding and reduce current-driven fatigue accumulation — require high-strength, permanent, non-corrosive fixing with 30+ year subsea life. The PA12GF Compact's system strength and compact buckle profile make it the engineered solution for VIV strake attachment on North Sea production risers and floating production systems
  • Subsea cable and umbilical bundle management: High-strength permanent bundling on seabed structures where metallic banding would corrode and polymer strength must substitute
  • Offshore topsides cable tray and congested bundle applications: The Compact's 60%-smaller buckle fits clearance-constrained installations on platform topsides where standard cable ties and Hybrid buckle profiles cannot be accommodated

PPS Compact: High Temperature and Sour Service

Polyphenylene Sulfide is the polymer of choice for aggressive chemical environments and elevated temperature zones. The Smart® Band PPS Compact extends the Compact system to applications where PA12GF's 110°C limit is insufficient:

  • Temperature to 175°C (347°F): Relevant for deep hot production risers, process piping in heated zones, and fire-rated areas where sustained elevated temperature is part of the design envelope
  • H2S sour service: PPS resists hydrogen sulphide — the material used in HCL's Smart Protector cable management system for sour gas North Sea and global subsea applications. Where PA12GF would degrade under H2S exposure, PPS Compact maintains its structural properties
  • V-0 flammability rating: UL94 V-0 (self-extinguishing within 10 seconds, no burning drip) — the correct specification for fire-rated zones on UKCS production platforms and SOLAS-regulated commercial vessels

What the SM-FT-4000-UN Brings to the Range

The SM-FT-4000-UN's defining capabilities are torque-controlled tensioning and universal Compact coverage. Every band — PA12GF or PPS, 19mm or 32mm — is installed to a precise, repeatable tension value. One tool, four Compact variants, one documented tension standard across the project.

For North Sea and global offshore operators who require certified installation records, the torque-controlled approach means every Compact band connection is documented to the same verified standard — a position manual tensioning tools cannot provide, however skilled the operative.

Torque Control: Why It Matters

Each Smart® Band Compact grade has a defined optimal tension range matched to the over-moulded buckle geometry and the glass-fibre or PPS reinforcement. The SM-FT-4000-UN translates a set input torque into consistent, measurable band tension — removing operator-to-operator variability from an installation process that, on a deepwater VIV strake programme or certified production run, must produce the same result every time. See our torque specifications guide for applicable tension values.

Universal Coverage: All Four Compact Variants in One Tool

A North Sea strake installation project may specify PA12GF 19mm for ancillary bundling, PA12GF 32mm for primary strake attachment, and PPS 32mm in fire-rated or sour zones on the same structure. Previously, that required multiple tool configurations. The SM-FT-4000-UN covers all four Compact variants in a single tool — fewer components to manage on the supply vessel, no risk of the wrong configuration being used on a specific band grade or width.

Installation Options: Dedicated Tool or Standard Hand Tools

Where certified, documented installation tension is the specification — North Sea and global offshore structures, VIV strake installation programmes, certified production environments — the SM-FT-4000-UN is the correct tool. Where guaranteed tension is not required, Smart® Band Compact can be installed using standard hand tools such as a spanner or ratchet, making the system practical for maintenance, repair, and low-volume work without specialist equipment on site.

Frequently Asked Questions: SM-FT-4000-UN

Which Smart® Band products is the SM-FT-4000-UN compatible with?

The SM-FT-4000-UN is compatible with the Smart® Band Compact range only — covering all four variants: PA12GF 19mm, PA12GF 32mm, PPS 19mm, and PPS 32mm. It is not compatible with Smart® Band Standard, Hybrid, PA66, Flex, or Smart® Tie. Contact HCL's technical support team to confirm the correct tool for other Smart® Band products.

What is the difference between Smart® Band PA12GF Compact and PPS Compact?

PA12GF Compact uses glass-fibre reinforced Nylon 12 — up to 5,929 lbf system strength, rated to 110°C (230°F). It is the correct specification for VIV strake installation, high-strength subsea bundling, and standard offshore cable management. PPS Compact uses Polyphenylene Sulfide — rated to 175°C (347°F), H2S sour service resistant, UL94 V-0 flammability. Specify PPS for fire-rated zones on UKCS platforms, high-temperature applications, and sour gas environments where PA12GF is excluded by temperature or chemical exposure.

What is VIV strake installation and why does it require the Smart® Band Compact?

Vortex-Induced Vibration strakes are helical fins attached to deepwater risers, tendons, and SCRs to disrupt vortex shedding from ocean currents, reducing the fatigue accumulation that can lead to riser fatigue failure. Attaching strakes to deepwater risers requires a fixing system that is permanent, non-corrosive, non-conductive, and rated for 30+ year subsea life at the design load. The Smart® Band PA12GF Compact's 5,929 lbf system strength, 30+ year life properties, and compact buckle profile make it the engineered solution for VIV strake attachment on North Sea and global deepwater production systems.

Can Smart® Band Compact be installed without a dedicated tool?

Yes — where certified installation tension is not required, Smart® Band Compact can be installed using standard hand tools such as a spanner or ratchet. For offshore structures, VIV strake installation programmes, and certified production environments where every connection must be documented to a specified tension, the SM-FT-4000-UN is the correct specification.

Is the SM-FT-4000-UN suitable for diver installation?

The SM-FT-4000-UN is designed for deck-level, shoreside, and surface-accessible offshore installations. For subsea diver and ROV-assisted work, the SM-FT-2000 remains the correct tool — lightweight, non-corrosive, and compact for restricted access and underwater environments.
