  • Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers (PBDE) — MCV 0.1%

RoHS 3 (2015/863/EU) — Four Additional Phthalates

  • Bis(2-Ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) — MCV 0.1%
  • Benzyl butyl phthalate (BBP) — MCV 0.1%
  • Dibutyl phthalate (DBP) — MCV 0.1%
  • Diisobutyl phthalate (DIBP) — MCV 0.1%

These phthalates are plasticisers historically added to PVC and some polymer compounds — their addition to the restricted list in 2019 extended RoHS compliance requirements to polymer components in EEE products, including polymer-bodied clamps used in electronic applications.

Does RoHS Apply Directly to Hose Clamps?

Standard, purely mechanical hose clamps are not directly within the scope of the RoHS Directive because they do not meet the definition of Electrical and Electronic Equipment (EEE). A standalone hose clamp does not require CE marking for RoHS compliance, and HCL Fasteners' mechanical fastener products are not classified as EEE.

This is the same position established in the CE marking guide — hose clamps do not require CE marking as standalone components, and affixing a CE mark to a standalone hose clamp would be incorrect.

However, RoHS holds significant relevance for hose clamps in an indirect capacity — when they are specified as components within a finished EEE product that is subject to the RoHS Directive.

When Does RoHS Apply to Hose Clamps?

If a hose clamp is incorporated as a component or spare part within a finished EEE product that is subject to RoHS, then the clamp's materials must conform to RoHS substance restrictions. The final product manufacturer's Declaration of Conformity — which carries the product's CE mark — covers all constituent components, and they must all comply.

Common scenarios where this applies to HCL products:

  • Household appliances: Washing machines, dishwashers, refrigerators, heat pumps — all classified as Category 1 EEE under RoHS 2. Hose clamps on internal water connections, cooling circuits, and compressor connections within these products must be RoHS-compliant. The Herbie Clip and Ezyclamp PA66 polymer clamps used in appliance cooling connections must be verified against phthalate restrictions under RoHS 3 — phthalate-free PA66 grades are used throughout HCL's polymer clamp range.

RoHS-Specific Considerations by Clamp Material

Stainless Steel Clamps (W4 304SS and W5 316SS)

W4 (304SS) and W5 (316SS) stainless steel clamps are inherently RoHS-compatible — the alloy composition of 304SS and 316SS does not contain lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, or brominated flame retardants. All-stainless clamps including Mikalor ASFA-S W4/W5, Jubilee stainless, and ABA W4/W5 present no RoHS substance compliance concerns at the material level.

Zinc-Plated Clamps (W1) — Hexavalent Chromium Consideration

The critical RoHS consideration for W1 zinc-plated mild steel clamps is hexavalent chromium (Cr6+) passivation. Historically, zinc plating was passivated with hexavalent chromium treatments to improve corrosion resistance — a process that would render the clamp non-RoHS-compliant. Modern zinc electroplating uses trivalent chromium (Cr3+) passivation which is RoHS-compliant. Polymer Clamps (PA66 Nylon) — Phthalate Consideration

The RoHS 3 phthalate restriction is the most practically relevant RoHS requirement for polymer hose clamps used in EEE applications. Phthalates are used as plasticisers in PVC and some polymer formulations — PA66 Nylon (used in HCL's Herbie Clip and Ezyclamp) does not typically require phthalate plasticisers, making PA66 Nylon clamps inherently low-risk for phthalate restriction. RoHS and REACH — the Two Key EU Chemical Regulations

  • REACH (EC 1907/2006): The broader EU chemical regulation — applies to all products placed on the EU market, not only EEE. REACH restricts Substances of Very High Concern (SVHC) through the Authorisation and Restriction process and requires SVHC communication through the supply chain when concentration exceeds 0.1% by weight in an article.
